The server and clients are both running up to date versions of windows 2000;
they are running on different systems.

Tony asked but it may have been overlooked (and could explain all this):
  Are you using XP Home?  Are you using XP pro with "simple file
sharing"?    Are you connecting from the local machine or another client?
