I was under the impression that using local was a big No No.  I thought
it could possibly corrupt files and leave dangling locked files?  Is
this true?

You can always have two sets of CVS/Root files (in the CVS subdirs) in
your sandbox, one for one "server" and one for the other.
This can be simply done by copying the CVS/Root file to say
CVS/Root.1, then opening this file changing the specification of the
"server" here.

Next you need two batch files, one to rename the Root file to Root.2
and Root.1 to Root, and the other to do it the other way around.
So when you use one "server" you switch to one set of Root files that
match this and then vice versa.

But please note that you are not using a CVS server when you specify
:local:, then you are letting the *client* work directly on the
repository files. This is OK if you are alone (which you are) but not
otherwise.
