[cvsnt] How to extract a the old version of a single file?

I tried (as per the essential cvs book)

 

cvs update -r 1.3 -p

 

to retrieve a file in my emacs *compilation* buffer. This worked, but it
also retrieved all the other files in that directory! I tried

 

cvs update -r 1.3 convex.pl -p

 

but this did not work.

 

How do extract a previous version without retrieving all the other files?
