[cvsnt] Mergepoint killer?

Tony--What actions can remove a mergepoint before the merged file is
committed?
 
The situation is that I have a developer who has managed to merge in from
HEAD at least a couple times, but hasn't saved a *single* mergepoint record
within all the files in this module he was working on.  Other than manually
merging the files entirely outside of CVS (which he was told not to do),
what could cause this?
 
I recall you saying something that indicated it was entirely possible to
clear a mergepoint field if you didn't commit (sometime) after the merge,
but there wasn't a direct list of things to watch out for.
