I've never thought it was quite seemless enough, myself.  The GUI
frontends are better at picking up the template file and displaying
it... the command line client misses sometimes.

It's still easy for the clients to get out of sync as the template is
stored locally.  There are arguments for and against that... personally I don't
really like the idea.
