Well that is an interesting discussion but I'm not quite sure of the
applicability. Exactly what do they mean by "access a network share via
CVS"? I don't access a share "via CVS" I run cvs when the current directory
is accessed via a share. Now perhaps that is what they meant, but in that
case the arguments against using shares are somewhat dubious:

- bandwidth

True, but that's my problem (or my network admins) nothing for cvs or the
cvs developers to worry about.

- security

Ditto. Not your problem guys. The security between me and my share is my
problem

- data integrity

Hmmm - sounds bad. But this is no different to any other application using a
share - if all applications followed this philosophy there would be no use
of shares! Now if I were accessing a share across a WAN then yes potential
failures could make this a risky setup - but across a LAN? I don't think so.
Besides, again this is *my* problem, not the cvs developers.

- accuracy

Ok this sounds samba specific - and may be enough reason to not use samba
shares.

- feasibility/support

Nuff said.

This sounds like a samba problem more than a share problem. I'm using
windows shares from windows, vai windows - not samba shares.

As I said this should just work "out of the box" and by and large it does -
except when the share is in "offline mode".

Anyway thanks for the information. Funny how things that appear so simple
from perspective, seem so complex from another. I guess before I head OS
again with my laptop I'll just have to copy the "sandbox" to a local drive.

Cheers,
David Holmes
