[cvsnt] commitids and duplicating files

I'm making a batch file that will check out every version of all the files 
in CVS, and then check them in (under a different name) with the -B (binary 
deltas) flag.  I then plan on writing a program to copy all the log entries 
and certain header information (author, date) over as well.  But I don't 
know if I should copy the commitid, or leave it be, or if this idea won't 
work.

Are the commitid's based off something I will be copying?
