[cvsnt] "query update" on binary files (-kb)

my low-bandwith-connected users pointed me to the following fact:
"query update" on binary files (seen as -kb in WinCVS) is very slow.
they faced the problem from the time on where we updated from 2.0.51d
to 2.5.01 (Travis) Build 1976. Now we work on 2.5.03 (Scorpio) Build 2151
and the behavior is the same. Clients work with different versions
somewhere between 2.0.51d and 2.5.01.1976.

My questions about this:
- are there any change between the server versions above,
  that may cause this behavior
- is "query update" comparing the whole binary byte by byte?
- is there a chance to adjust some paramters to handle this
by checksum/CRC or something like this to speedup the process?
- is there any other chance (changing file type to something different)
that may speedup (except speeding up the connection ;-))
- does this may depend also on Clients cvs version?

best regards,
Alexander Zoernack
