[cvsnt] Is it is necessary to checkout and get a local copy fordiff command?

Is it is necessary to checkout and get a local copy for diff command?
Plz help now if possible i will be very thankful to you.What is the
meaning working directory"? Is it the checked out local copy from
repository.
