Updated release of UD6 2.1.05.1196, Eclipse IDE for Uniface source code. Coming soon: UD6 3.1 beta and Uniface eXtensions Marketplace on http://theu.info

We have just released a minor update to UD6 plus Option Pack, including source code for the Eclipse IDE for Uniface. The contribution period for open source changes to UD6IDE is temporarily closed and will re-open after the beta release of UD6 3.1. To be a part of the team developing the Eclipse IDE for Unfiace get in touch today!

Whenever we get to visit customers and Uniface Users, looking at what you are doing with UD6 and Uniface - time and again we've seen things that we're sure other Uniface developers would also want to see and use. So now we have expanded the UD6 user stories web site to now also promote other Uniface eXtensions. Currently on the web site we have got some teaser information up on LXScript and Uniface Monitor UMON and we hope to have videos and downloadable trials available in the coming months. Want to see?

Eclipse IDE for Uniface 6, 7, 8 and 9 (UD6IDE)

We've been advertising for years that when your Uniface source repository is stored in UD6 text files then you can use any editor, and now with this open source project you can use the most popular and powerful editor ever designed, not just for Uniface developers, but developers of all languages.

The UD6IDE is usable today and included in the UD6+Option Pack 'complete' install, but is recommended primarily for Uniface and Java developers contributing to the development of the IDE. With the forthcoming beta release of UD6 3.1 we will be providing ready to run releases of the UD6IDE.

It's always been important to us that this is a community development. So Udo Pott presented it at the Uniface User Group in Boulogne-Billancourt and was also at the Uniface User Group Event in Maidenhead UK. Udo presented earlier editions at Uniface User Group in Darmstadt Germany as well as at the Switzerland Uniface User Group, and Arthur Barrett presented at the North American Uniface User Group in Las Vegas as well as at the Dutch Uniface User Group in Haarzuilens, The Netherlands.

A video of the Dutch Presentation (in English) is available online, it includes the web services explorer, command completion, refactoring, multi-trigger editor, model editor, global search, and more.

You can find our release plans for UD6IDE as well as what is already implemented, what is yet to be implemented, how to configure UD6 to work with UD6IDE and how to get the source code and contribute to the project by reading the library article. The article will have significant updates with the release of UD6 3.1 beta.

News from March Hare Software

It's been a busy time for us here here, so it probably has been for you too. So we thought it a good idea to remind you of a few important announcements we made last year:

  • due to the UK voting to leave the EU we will be opening March Hare Software in Germany. Exact location and timing still to be determined. We intend for there to be minimal impact for our European customers - if anything there will be greater price stability because we will no longer have to link the UK and EU prices. Our UK office will remain open for UK and non-EU customers, and our US/NY office will continue to deal with customers in the US.
  • Udo Pott our long time friend and colleague has recently retired and so Carles Zaragoza in Spain will be looking after our German customers until the new office is open.
  • Prices for new UD6 licenses and the software maintenance on new licenses is due to increase with the release of UD6 3.1. If you need additional licenses we strongly suggest getting a quote at the current prices. This is our first price rise since 2005. Existing licenses are not affected. The base currency for the new prices will be EURO.
  • UD6 3.1 release will require the 'option pack' - ie: it will be one price for UD6 plus Option Pack and you will not be able to purchase UD6 without the Option Pack. All existing customers with current software maintenance will received UD6 3.1.
  • Existing customers with current software maintenance but without Option Pack licenses will continue to recieve updates to UD6 but it will not contain new features or the option pack. If you would like to upgrade to the option pack at special prices, please email the team.
  • Uniface 10 Enterprise Edition has been released and still stores your source code in a database - not in text files. There is yet another new VC-Link type interface, but again it stores a COPY OF your source code in text - not the actual source code - leading to an inability to use 3rd party build workflows and editors etc. We are currently reviewing customer demand to determine future plans to support Uniface 10.2 with UD6. Due to architecture changes in the IDF it will require significant work. If there is no demand from customers for UD6 for Uniface 10 then we will focus on enahncement to UD6 for Uniface 9. The earliest a UD6 4.1 release for Uniface 10 would be available is 2018 (maybe sooner for beta releases and if there is sufficient demand).

And finally our principal Arthur Barrett and his wife Susan have just had their baby girl: Nelle born on 1st September 2016. Arthur has only recently currently full time from paternity leave and is looking forward to getting back into his other 'working' role.

FAQ about upgrading to 2.1.05.1196

Many customers may never have upgraded UD6 before, or not be familiar with the procedure. Here are a quick guide:

  • install UD6 to a new directory, select the version of Uniface you are using during install. If you are using multiple releases of Uniface you need to re-install UD6 several times to different directories.
  • The installation includes release.txt with a list of all the changes. To see exactly what has changed from your current release to this one compare your current release.txt file with the new one.
  • You do not need to upgrade old UD6 installations if you have no problems with them, you can just install the newer UD6 for use with the newer Uniface release.
  • Old UD6 releases do not work with the newer releases of Uniface - UD6 build 1163 will not work with Uniface 9.7, use UD6 build 1196 for Uniface 9.7.
  • To upgrade you must reference the new DLL's from your ASN file and also copy the ofields and overflows ud6 configuration files to your config directory.
  • We recommend customers never modify the UD6 configuration files ofields and overflows. If you have modified these in your existing installation, you will need to perform the same modifications to the updated files.
  • The configuration file joins is often modified by customers, so is usually not upgraded. However there is a known bug with the UARCHITEM/UARCHIVE definition. If you are affected by this bug you should copy the new definition from the new joins file to your existing file.
  • All the other UD6 configuration files do not need to be upgraded, but if you are starting a new project/repository we recommend you use the latest configuration files.

If you encounter a problem with the upgrade please email the support team via support@march-hare.com and include: your IDF logfile/message frame; your ASN file including USYS$UD6_PARAMS; your Uniface verrsion including patches; your UD6 version; relavent XML files and UD6 config files..

UD6 3.1

The first beta of UD6 3.1 with a compiled and usable Eclipse IDE for Uniface will be released in a few weeks time. Our developers are working to finalise a 1.0 release of the editor: it won't do everything but it is designed to be usable by a lot of the community and allow you to extend and enhance it with the included source code.

You will have two upgrade options: the traditional upgrade where your UD6 source code remains unchanged; and a second upgrade option where you export/import your sources to use the new XML format compatible with UD6IDE and modern XML parsing tools. Recent customers who are already using the ud6ide setting may require a 3rd upgrade option, which will be detailed at release.

We know the documentation is getting old, but there are currently no plans for major upgrades. UD6 3.1 will include a re-written install and upgrade section, but it may not be complete in the first beta.

The full list of new features in UD6 3.1 will be provided in the release email.

Usergroups Presentations, On site consulting etc.

If you require on site consulting to help with an upgrade or installation or design of a change management system; or you have a Uniface User Group you would like us to present at - please email the sales team via sales@march-hare.com ASAP so we can fit you in.

Trials, Extensions and Evaluation Assistance

If you have an expired trial of UD6, we can supply time extensions, and if you are having difficulties getting the ASN files and configuration right - don't despair, help is just an email away. Most customers evaluating UD6 (or long time customers implementing a new feature) do need help at some point, please do not hesitate to get in touch via sales@march-hare.com.

Sincerely,
The March Hare Team:
