Uniface 9 released 2007 Go Home

Uniface 9 has been released!

The first GA release of Uniface 9 is planned for December 2006. Launch promotions for the new Uniface 9.1 will begin at the CU2006 User Conference in Strasbourg, France in early November.

The Contents of Uniface 9.1


Unicode Support



Uniface 9 will be fully Unicode enabled, providing deployed Uniface applications with language transparency and delivering the following benefits to customers:

  • Support for multiple complex languages in one Uniface application

  • Additional language support

  • Integration flexibility

  • Standards confirmation

  • A foundation for the future.


Enhanced Web Development


Several significant enhancements to increase the functionality and usability of the development and maintenance of Uniface web applications include:

  • Integrated Web Development, enabling the development and maintenance of Uniface web applications integrated into the Uniface Development Environment and stored in the Uniface repository

  • XHTML output, enabling the development of modern, standards-compliant Web applications.


Enhanced Uniface Development Environment

New features and enhancements to the Uniface Development Environment include:

  • A Graphical Model Viewer, providing a graphical view of the entities and relationships in the application model

  • Enhanced color handling, providing W3C compliant color support

  • Import and export to XML, including the option to automatically compress the output to .zip format

  • Dual monitor support

  • New and enhanced Procedural Code statements and functions

  • Overhauling various parts of the UDE to increase usability and productivity.


GUI Enhancements


Support for Windows Vista, the latest operating system release from Microsoft, enabling customer applications to embrace features specified in the Microsoft Windows Vista style guide such as:

  • The Aero theme

  • Windows Vista system font

  • Use of glass (semi-transparent) window frames

  • Windows Vista task dialogs, messages and common controls


New and updated Widget controls providing customers with the opportunity to enrich the user experience of their application. These include:

  • A rich text edit control

  • A calendar control

  • An output box widget

  • A color picker widget

  • Enhancements to the grid, tree and list box widgets

  • Expanded and simplified ‘widget properties’ across most of the existing widgets.

  • Dynamic menus, enabling application menus to be procedurally changed according to application logic



The Uniface Query Tool

A Uniface 9.1 version of the Query Tool is planned for release with Uniface 9.1. Details will be provided later.


Uniface Documentation

Based on customer feedback, we plan to implement several usability and content enhancements, to improve information retrieval, navigation, focus and relevance.


Migration Path

Migration to Uniface 9.1 will be supported from Uniface 8.3 and Uniface 8.4. Although Uniface 9.1 contains significant changes, considerable work has already taken place to ensure the migration steps for Uniface 9 will be as simple as possible for the existing customer base.


Discontinued Currency

Uniface 9 will mark the end of support for the 32bit proprietary Unix distributions from Sun, IBM and HP. Support for current 64bit distributions from these vendors and support for 32bit Linux distributions will continue.

Support for the UD/400 or Split driver to access the IBM iSeries will be discontinued in preference of the Uniface server products for the iSeries.

Support for Windows NT (client and workstation) and for HP Tru64 Unix also will be discontinued, which is in accordance with the support status from Microsoft and HP.
