Right. But I if I don't mind that all users (all 4 of them) can have access
to all parts of the repository, this doesn't matter, right?  Or do I not
understand what's wrong with all checkins happening as SYSTEM.

So, given that I only have a few users that need to get in, and I trust all
of them, and all I care about is that *only* these few users can get in, and
my server is based on XP Home, what *should* I use?  I'm still leaning
toward SSH.
