[cvsnt] How does CVS Checkout work

How exactly does the CVS Checkout work? Does it just have one continuous
stream when it checks out or does it grab a few, then open another
stream to the server and grab more until all of the files are pulled
down?

 

Also, How does the CVS update work? For example how does it know which
files have changed and how does it know that I don't have the latest
updates? Does it do a cross reference first and then pull down what is
needed?
